THE SCALES

Balance the beam. Crew of different weights, and you choose where each one stands — because where they stand matters as much as what they weigh.

What this machine is actually teaching

A beam balances when the turning force is equal on both sides. That force is called torque, and it is simply weight × distance from the pivot.

So a light crew member standing far out can hold down a heavy one standing close in. Twenty kilos at four metres beats forty kilos at one metre. The numbers on screen are that multiplication, live, as you drag.

It is why a long spanner loosens a bolt a short one cannot, why door handles are on the far side from the hinge, and why a seesaw works at all with a parent on one end and a kid on the other.
