THE PIT

Two aliens, one ring, and a lesson in leverage. Their centre of mass rises and falls — push when it is high, and they go out. Push when they are heavy and you lose the ground instead.

What this machine is actually teaching

Wrestling, judo and sumo all run on the same physics: leverage and centre of mass. The centre of mass is the single point where all of someone’s weight effectively acts. The higher it sits, the longer the lever your push has — and the easier they are to tip.

The gold circle on your opponent is their centre of mass, and it moves as they breathe and shift. Push while it is high and you move them a long way. Push while they are settled low and you do the work for nothing — and they take ground from you instead.

This is why a wrestler drops their hips before contact, why a sumo rikishi starts almost on the floor, and why it is nearly impossible to shove over someone who has squatted. Nothing about it is strength. It is a lever, and you get to choose when to pull it.
